一种菱形邻域，可用于定义围绕给定单元格 (x_0,y_0) 的一组单元格，这些单元格可能会影响二维细胞自动机在正方网格上的演化。范围为 r 的冯·诺伊曼邻域定义为

N_((x_0,y_0))^v={(x,y):|x-x_0|+|y-y_0|<=r}.

上面说明了范围为 r=0、1、2 和 3 的冯·诺伊曼邻域。范围为 r 的冯·诺伊曼邻域中的单元格数量是中心平方数 2r(r+1)+1，前几个是 1、5、13、25、41、61、... (OEIS A001844)。
